Marked at the bottom with a dark red glaze mark Vkhutemas, Russia, Moscow, 1921. The porcelain factory Vkhutemas Dulevo, painted according to the design of Oganese Tatevosian, porcelain, painted and gilded, circular plate with a scalloped rim, central depiction of a man in traditional dress holding an orange carpet with text in Arabic "WORKERS OF ALL THE WORLD CONNECT" with a wheat cob, a hammer and a sickle in the background decorated with stars, a border ornate six cartouches with industrial scenes, oriental lady, school and date 1921, also in Arabic "Souvenir of the Third Communist International Congress", all gilded margins, diameter 26 cm This item was auctioned at Christie's, King Street, 1.6.2015, Russian art. Issued export license. Provenance: Obtained by the grandmother of the current owner in Russia before the Second World War. This plate was designed by painter Oganes Tatevosian (1899-1974). After writing to Vkhutemas in 1921, Tatevosian was asked to design porcelain articles for participants of the Third Congress of the Communist International, held in Moscow in 1921. The current propaganda plate is often referred to as the Awakening of the East, the symbols of which are depicted in cartouches.
