Adam Štech, an outstanding representative of contemporary Czech painting, belongs to the middle
generation of artists who, since the noughties, have been devoted to updating the classical
hanging painting and exploring the possibilities of contemporary expressive
means in painting. Štech has created a distinctive artistic style in which
in the wake of postmodernism, looking back to the interwar modernist
art movements and works freely with them. Mostly figurative and portrait
paintings contain an element of deformation and deconstruction, a new composition
and arrangement of individual body and portrait parts, in which the
also contains an element of play and humour. Portrait of President Václav Havel
wearing an orange striped sweater containing highlighted basic features
and the ubiquitous cigarette, despite the unrealistic depiction, is simply
identifiable. The painting Pin up girl, an American post-war motif
popular culture, is created by Štech using a mosaic technique in which he combines references
to pointillism with the popular technique of the socialist constructionist
realism in the former Czechoslovakia, distant from the culture of the
Western world.
